THE MIAMI CITY CLUB IS BACK

Miami, Florida (June 24, 2009) The Miami City Club name will again top the 55 story Wachovia Financial Center in downtown Miami. On June 24, 2009, the Board of Directors of the Miami City Club terminated the services of its operator, Havana Club Enterprises, LLC, and reassumed direct management of the Club. All of the current employees not directly associated with the old managers have been asked to stay. Ruth Shack, Board Chair of the Club, made the announcement to Club employees this morning in the club’s main dining room. “The Club needs to embrace the traditions of the Club that made it the center point of business and community here in Miami,” Shack was quoted as saying. “We believe that our direct management of the Club will enhance the club experience both for existing members and will create a welcome atmosphere for old friends and members who miss the old feel of the club.”

The Miami City Club has been located on the top floor of the Wachovia Financial Center since 1994, when it was formed through the merger of the venerable Miami Club which had been housed in what is now the SunTrust Building and the City Club of Miami, founded in 1984, which had been housed in the Wachovia Financial Center. Together the club’s membership roster boasted the leaders of the Miami business and civic community.

In 2006, the Club’s board decided to employ Havana Club Enterprises which introduced new programs and members to the Club along with a renovation of the Club facilities. That arrangement is now terminated. Fellow Board member and long-time club member, Nabil Achkar, echoed Shack’s theme: “We believe that the best interests of the Club’s members will be served by its board reassuming direction and operations of the Club. In addition, we want to reach out and bring home members who have belonged to the club in the past, but who have not been as happy with the new club format and themes as we had hoped they would be.”

The Club’s board named a new interim general manager, John Collier, previously the General Manager of the Banker’s Club, who assumed operational control of the Club Wednesday morning. “The Miami City Club was the leading business club in South Florida for years. I am excited that the Board has chosen me to lead the fine team of club professionals here to re-capture the traditions and community support that the Club has enjoyed over the past decades. They have instructed me to make this the best club in town for our current members and to work hard to welcome back members who miss the old feel and spirit of the Club.”

Ruth Shack has led the Dade Community Foundation as president since 1985. Nabil Achkar, a long-time international banker on the Miami scene, is the General Manager of Interaudi Bank and Secretary of the Miami Consular Corps. The Miami City Club was formed in 1994 through the consolidation of the City Club of Miami, which had been founded in 1984, and the Miami Club, which was founded over 70 years ago.
