About me:
Raising the bar in Coral Gables since 1996 - The Globe Cafe and Bar is Coral Gables' most popular after-work and Friday night happy hour spot. Young professionals come here to escape the nine-to-five world and submerge themselves in the spirits of the work afterlife. Although the place gets so crowded you can't hear or see much, try to cram inside the bar, where a rich-looking interior meets a decent menu and, on the weeknights, live jazz. This place is as hip as it gets in conservative Coral Gables, if you can endure a tragicomedy of errors in service. Great for a late-night snack or for hanging out to graze on appetizers and light fare, it has hooked the local social set with a stunning international wine list, from which it offers about 20 exceptional selections by the glass. Dig into a lobster club sandwich, delightful steamed mussels and sea bass with mushrooms and mashed potatoes. The eclectic menu is an abbreviated representation of---what else?---global cuisine, with clever signature dishes borrowed from the finest hotels on the globe (such as Waldorf chicken salad). Live music is diverse as the planet's cultures, with frenetic alternative bands and exotic ethnic rhythms drawing crowds as readily as the more ambient jazz ensembles. But back to the libations, which are pretty much why most people travel this Globe. In addition to the usuals of wine list and bar, there is some amusing cocktail conversation to be overheard here. On Friday nights, the Globe expands into the streets, where cops set up barriers to keep the revelers away from the traffic. Makeshift bars are set up outside because the inside bar just can't handle the crowds. Have patience because the bartenders are quick, but haven't yet mastered the skill of serving hundreds at once. Should you come on, say, a Monday or Tuesday, you'll discover what you'll never find here on Fridays -- a whole new world of sophisticated boozing.-- (Review by Lesley Abravanel)
