A diamond in the rough some would call it, once first glance has skimmed through the bitter surroundings of its location. An easy spot to miss but all the better for those that have the fortune of its discovery. With very few choices for food in the area, owners Claude Postel and Clarie Bienvenu, have accomplished what they set out to do; establish a place in the neighborhood where people can get a good meal.

It is all very true. I have seen it myself. You walk around downtown and there are fried food stands everywhere and there are people lined up to get their coffee and empanadas every day. There are more fast food restaurants and the restaurants that do have healthier choices are overly priced. So of course in these times people are trying to conserve a little and go for the economic choice. Shopping healthy is very expensive too. I try to buy only the healthy items that I know I eat all the time: Organic Bread in the frozen section, egg whites, organic peanut butter, fruits and veggies.

There are some new clients that I have just picked up and it is sad to see young adults who are obese! I am talking between the ages of 22-32 and they are considered obese. I see it at boot camp as well. There are young people who try my boot camp and my 40, 50; 60 year olds are passing them by!! What is that all about? Is the problem that young Miami people are too lazy?

Something that I hear all of the time from people in their late teens and early 20s is that they can eat anything, they don’t gain weight, because at that point their genetics has held them from becoming overweight but once they continue to eat fried food, white rice and beans everyday it will ALWAYS catch up to you. This is called “CREEPING OBESITY”. It can happen to anyone. Most of my clients wish they could have started much earlier in their life because they know they could be looking and feeling better even more so than they do now training with me.

I also believe that we are too concerned with the next most happening party and newest happy hour instead of taking care of ourselves first. I am a believer of being social, going out and having a great time, but you need to take care of business at your job and the well being of yourself before anything. The reality is, is that the purpose of going to happy hours, and going out is to meet new people and with friends, but eventually you’re not going to want to be seen. I do not mean to sound superficial because it is not all about the looks, it is about the disease that you will develop.
What is your excuse for not working out at least 3-4 days per week?Too Busy to Exercise?tag:www.miamiurbanlife.com,2008-10-30:1256554:BlogPost:5137782008-10-30T16:00:00.000ZRob DiDonatohttp://www.miamiurbanlife.com/profile/RobDiDonato

Time is the single component that runs everything in the world. We manage our lives based on this component. When there is not enough not time certain priorities are unaccomplished. One of those priorities that we can easily make excuses to leave out is exercise. Most of us have a tight schedule which leaves us with no time, exhausted, hungry, and unmotivated. Motivation is the key here. There is this myth where people think they have to workout for an hour or more in order for it to be considered a good workout. This myth needs to be addressed today, and I know most of you, including myself can use these tools to work yourself in a shorter period of time.

We can begin to discuss how a workout that is under 60 minutes can be beneficial. For the obvious reason doing something is better than nothing! Calories expended in a 30-45 minute routine will go along way rather than not doing anything. You are talking about at least 150-200 calories that could be burned off. Instead that will just add to the calories that you are eating when you should be exercising. Pushing yourself in these durations will bring you closer to a negative caloric intake, burn fat, activate the nervous system, increase endurance, build strength, and will aid in fighting disease. There are many modalities for 20, 30, and 45 minute workouts.

Now, we can discuss what you can possibly do in that time and how to do it. First you need to use this precious time wisely, which means shorter rest periods, your warm-up needs to be specific, and the regimen should be a total body routine. A specific warm-up is using the movements used in your routine as the warm up. For example, to do leg exercises in your routine then you can warm up with gradual lunges and gradual squats. This means do the movement half way, and work your way into the complete movement.

Now here is the workout. We need to utilize your body weight as much as possible.
Example: Push-ups with body squats. You will do as many as you possibly can for 4 sets with a 30 second rest period. Those two exercises use the most muscles and they are challenging. This is so simple and can be done anywhere!
After those 4 sets are finished we can move to forward and backward lunges with pull ups or planks.
This workout will burn a lot of calories, build strength, endurance, and burn fat.

Here are other examples of challenging exercises that should be done in a routine short in duration.
-Boxing Jabs
-Jumping Rope
-Mountain Climbers
-Jump Squats
-Sprinting Intervals
-Jump Pull Ups
-Jumping Jacks

There are many more that you can add, just make sure they are challenging, use short rest periods, and push yourself to the max. Your heart rate should never become close to 50% of your max heart rate. You do not need 60 minutes, use those valuable minutes in your life to better yourself. You are NEVER too busy to exercise, that excuse is abused too often. I am not saying you have to do this every day but setting aside at least 3 days will put you ahead of the game. It can be done, use anything you can to motivate yourself. Disease related deaths are increasing every year, and most can be prevented through exercise. Please try to use your valuable time wisely.
The main reason why myself and my company, Executive Fitness, have been successful is because we realize how reality and fitness correlate.

Body builders and fitness models dedicate their lives to developing their physiques because that is their main source of income and it is what they love to do. For most, that is not reality; waking up at 5AM for 1 hour of cardio and then later that evening weight train, for 5-6 days per week. You do not have the time to do this and the dedication needs to…

Body builders and fitness models dedicate their lives to developing their physiques because that is their main source of income and it is what they love to do. For most, that is not reality; waking up at 5AM for 1 hour of cardio and then later that evening weight train, for 5-6 days per week. You do not have the time to do this and the dedication needs to be there year after year.

The average person in the corporate world works 40+ hours a week, comes home starving after a long day, has a big dinner, and maybe a drink or two or three. When Friday comes, forget it, happy hour is on your mind all day long, or for some, all week long! You need to exercise and motivate yourself to do the little things along the way so that you do not fall into unhealthy categories that will be detrimental to your health in the long run. I realize that my clients are going to party, wine and dine their clients, always on the go for business, and are not active if they are not having a personal training session. Here are my tips and tricks for all of you who may find yourself in the same situation as given above.

Let's talk about alcohol. We all love to be social and party once and a while. Once your body realizes that alcohol enters the body, it immediately wants to metabolize it. When you hear people explain how they gained all their weight in college because of drinking too much, that is only half true. Two things will cause you to gain weight while partying. The sugar level in most mix drinks, and eating while you are drinking.

Beer drinkers only have to worry about the high caloric and high carbohydrate value in dark beer not the sugar. Most light beer is low in calories, sugar and carbohydrates. BUT…
No matter what you drink, if you are eating before, during or after drinking, your body does not want to metabolize your food! It wants to get rid of the alcohol first. So what happens to all that food? Depending on your alcohol intake the food will be stored and eventually become fat.
This seems to be a lose-lose situation. It is, but here's the trick; start by drinking clear spirits. I recommend drinking Gin and Soda Water, NOT tonic, a splash of grapefruit or cranberry juice with a lime wedge. Rums, Tequilas, are very high in sugar. Vodka is high in sugar but not as much. Gin is my drink of choice and I have noticed a difference with clients who have tried this. The sugar level is very low, the soda water enables the alcohol to become metabolized more efficiently, the alcohol content in Gin is always very high, and most people do not have hangovers with drinking only Gin.

We all get hungry while drinking, so try to pick foods that are low in calories which fill you up. Stay away from all the bread, pasta, and fried foods. Bar food like mixed nuts are a very good choice. Eat at least an hour before drinking that way your body is in the process of metabolizing food and you will not begin your drinking on an empty stomach.

I am not promoting drinking in any way, but I do understand the reality of the corporate world and my job is to help you along the way so that you do not completely fall off track. We at Executive Fitness want you to be as healthy as possible and the above tricks will guide you from straying off into an unhealthy state. I look forward to hearing from you all with questions and comments.
Nutrition is vital for reaching your goals. There are many myths that need to be addressed before we move on to realistic situations throughout your week.
You need to set aside what you see and hear on TV and pay attention to the basics. You do not need to buy into TV dinners, or follow insane diets; THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A DIET. Diets are made to fail. Just eating what is right for you is all you need to succeed!!! Below is my Nutrition 101.

Let’s start with calories per unit.
FAT: 9 kcal/ gram
Carbs: 4 kcal/ gram
Protein: 4 kcal/ gram
Alcohol: 7 kcal/gram

Stay away from the following: Partially Hydrogenated fat and Hydrogenated fat.

This is important because you need to realize how many calories per serving each of these units (protein, carbs, fat…) your food and beverages contain. The key word is PER SERVING!!

Now, I understand that the general population does not have the time to count calories and I never ask my clients to do that. You will drive yourself crazy and lose interest with eating properly. Make sure you look at the key word “Per Serving” and also pay attention to the sugar. Sugar will make you gain weight and increase fatty tissue faster than carbohydrates will.

ONE single pound of body is equivalent to 3500 calories! The average American eats 2900 calories per day! Please take all of this in for a moment….
In order to burn all of these calories you need to run a marathon.
A rule is too burn at least 2000 calories per week. It is important to work out at least four times per week. My boot camp will help you burn about 400 calories in 45 minutes!!

Here is the solution.
Smaller portions and start eating every 4 hours will be a great start. Eating more during the day will keep your metabolism from storing your food.
To do this you will have to fill a cooler pack with all the food you will need while at work and the rule is to only eat what you place in that cooler. That way you will have time to eat more during the day using smaller portions and you will be able to keep yourself away from those tempting vending machines.

Losing weight by using these tricks is easy to do. They will help, if you stick with it and put your mind to it. It has to be done, no matter what your age, or what your body composition is. There is such a thing called creeping obesity when your at the young age of 35 and have no idea how you gained 20-30lbs in the course of 5-10 years.
Start now, so that there is a healthy future.

Next week I will be writing about how to snack and drink during happy hour.

One myth about eating is the less you eat, the more you will lose weight. That is not entirely true. Breakfast is the most important part of your day. Just like your car, your engine needs fluids in order for it to work properly. Our metabolism is our engine for starting our bodies. It is important to begin your day off with water and food.
The American College of Sports Medicine states that it has been proven that water will jump start your metabolism which will help you burn more calories and your mind and body will be more efficient throughout the day.

The average human being in the corporate world works a long day with early mornings and there is nothing easier than to pick up a cup of coffee and eat a bagel with cream cheese.
Take the first step and exchange that bagel and cream cheese for oatmeal mixed with fruit, milk, cinnamon, or have it plain.

Your second step will be to exchange your morning coffee for tea or water. Green tea may not be as strong as coffee but the caffeine in tea lasts longer, and alertness is sustained throughout the day.

Other Breakfast Choices:
Yogurt (low in sugar)
Eggs (Preferably Egg whites)
Whole Wheat Toast
Stay away from juices that are high in sugar

There is no such thing as a diet; there are healthy habits that need to be adapted into your lifestyle. I am here to guide you every week to help you achieve your fitness goals. My name is Rob DiDonato CEO/Founder of Executive Fitness; I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise and Sports Science with a specialization in Strength and Conditioning. My experiences with working with athletes from the University of Miami, Florida International University, being the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Miami-Dade College, along with continuing to work with personal clients in the downtown, Brickell area has given me the knowledge to help anyone achieve their fitness goals.
