Who's your neighbor?

Who here thinks Downtown Miami/Brickell is ready for more...

With the Miami Heat grabbing three of the biggest stars in the NBA and putting us in the global spotlight, Rentals throughout all the condos in downtown and Brickell filling up faster then owners can put rentals on the market, and businesses slowly trickling in...its proof that Miami is on the verge of something great.

On any given night, you can drive around and find places with a crowd spilling on to the sidewalks.  Block parties and events as of late have been huge successes.  We have the AAA Arena a few MetroMover stops away from your condo and soon, in 2012, a baseball stadium that will be just a short Taxicab ride to the front steps of what will be a state of the art stadium(with a crazy fish tank skirting the field).  And a beautiful Performing Arts Center that is ready to offer some of the greatest shows south of the NYC.

But yet I feel this is only the beginning and there can be so much more.  We are the epicenter of the Americas, and a favorite for foreign investors.  I constantly see young professionals leaving behind the suburbs, even renting out the homes they bought into years ago, to move into the vibrant city and high rise living.

What I would like from this discussion is to hear from the neighbors and see what you think can add to this city.  For instance:
  • This city is full of young professionals creating a name for themselves in their business trade, so perhaps a monthly networking event that travels to a different location each time to promote a new venue.
  • I think a silent but powerful trait to improving the feel of a city is charity events, but lets hear the charities you want to raise money for and will grab your interest in getting you out of your routine.
Now lets hear your ideas! or even just add your thoughts to the discussion...

I think downtown needs more bars and restaurants to stay open late. Downtown has the potential to be like a Manhattan, but everything closes early. Many of the restaurant/bars open and close on odd hours. Also not to mention 80% of downtown is closed after 7pm and on weekends.I don't understand why.Can someone explain this to me?
Now, I know the DDA is on Miamiurbanlife, and hopefully they will see these posts and work on some of the ideas you brought up. A dog park would be a good idea, as a Realtor, going in and out of these buildings I constantly see people in and out of their elevators with pets of all sizes. Restaurants are slowly coming, but as the article brings up that Alex just posted on condo sales, good shopping you have to outside downtown to do. We definitely need to get the DDA and City of Miami to figure out ways to get more affordable restaurants and named stores into the downtown area and maybe a bit more security pushing to make the Metromover more comfortable.

Downtown is filling up quickly, and the need for more in the city places to eat, shop and hang out is going to keep growing. The more businesses see places like Mary Brickell and Bayside being constantly filled and restaurants making profits, businesses will come. How we can help is by holding events and attracting our neighbors to join us in these places and help promote our neighborhood.

I hope to hear more responses and every handful that I get, I will be happy to forward to the board of the DDA so they can see what we want in Downtown!
Love this discussion. Miami is ready.

I'd love to see monthly networking events for entrepreneurs, and I am volunteering to help spearhead this initiative. Randomly enough, I spoke with the GM at Tre (W Flager, just down from Mia) and he offered to close off the entire inside of the lounge/ restaurant for an event. He even offered to let a DJ of our choosing plug into the lounge's sound system.

As for charities, I'd like to plan an event for Save the Blue (http://savetheblue.org/) The importance of marine life and the ocean can not be understated, especially for a tourism driven city like Miami.

MOST OF ALL I'd like to get some intramural sports leagues going! What better way to mix than competing in football, futbol, or... um.. frisbee? I'm reminded of Wedding Crashers...
