Who's your neighbor?

"Shame on" the protestors who are littering Brickell

Is anyone else miffed at the constant presence of the "Shame On" protestors in the Brickell area?!

These "protestors" belong to a union that employs people who have NEVER WORKED IN BRICKELL.  Their goal is to place shame on the businesses that drive our community, in hopes of contributions to their union as a payout to make them go away.  Better yet, after speaking with many of these individuals, I have yet to meet one of them who has any qualified INTEREST in working in the Brickell area.

I love free speech, and would never propose to stifle it or squash a person's ability to protest.  This however, is not an issue regarding free speech.  This is harassment and borderline extortion.  I pity the people that feel it is necessary to resort to such bad behavior.  Have they no pride?

What can be done to help these individuals find peace in their life, get a productive job, and get their megaphones out of Brickell?

Respectfully,

Hi John!

I've been working in Brickell for over 4 years now and Lord knows I've heard more than my fair share of whistle-blowers, can-bangers and megaphone chants bouncing around from building to building. They chant and holler incessantly with nothing but jibberish pouring from their mouths and as if the noise echoing into the busy offices and homes wasn't enough they have the audacity to hand you a flyer when you cross their path or come out of the building.

Worst thing about this is that when you ask them what they're protesting about, not one can tell you the reason behind it. So is it really considered "protesting" or disturbing the peace?

I know it's simply just a paycheck for most of these protestors but the persons behind the hiring of them should eventually realize how ineffective these protests are when they're protestors are protesting empty words. John, they have no pride or common sense.

On top of all that, seriously- every time they move to a new building to protest it's always the same people and to us residents and workers all we say is "here they go again."

My frustration is with you and I wish there was a better means for these folks to have a more substantial job, unfortunately we just have to tune them out until they find something better.
Some of the people protesting are acutally homeless. Thats how they make money to get food. Thats why they don't know what they are protesting about and really don't care.
I'm aware of this, however, there are better and more effective ways to put the homeless to work while benefiting both interests and not being disruptive.
I've seen them out there numerous times. I don't really see how this can be effective.
I agree there is better ways to put the homeless to work like teaching them job skills to benefit themselves however there are dirtbags out there that take advantage of people’s situations for their own needs hence homeless protesters.

I appreciate everyone's participation on this discussion, and the professional manner in which everyone has expressed themselves. I wish I had a solution to alternative employment for these individuals, however I do not have anything specific to offer, as employment depends on the individual and their attitude, as well as skills.

If you're interested in slowing down the progress of the disruption, then please contact the non-emergency Miami-Dade police department to file any legitimate noise complaints. That number is (305) 579-6111.

Also, our voices should be heard by calling the Office of Community Relations at 305-416-1351. Their mission is to foster mutual understanding, tolerance, and respect, among all economic, social, religious and ethnic groups in the City of Miami. These groups, no matter how agitated they are, are clearly not being mutually respectful or tolerant of our existence in the Brickell area, and might need some coaching on how to be better neighbors.

Another avenue is to contact the Nuisance Abatement Board. This board, comprised of five members, usually meets on the third Monday or Thursday of every month at 6:30 PM at Miami City Hall and its purpose is generally:

•To determine the existence of public nuisances within the City of Miami properties used in violation of law.
This department typically processes cases for:

•Drug Possession and Sale
•Gang Activity
•Noise
•Prostitution
We have a case to make with this board regarding noise.

Last, we should contact a city official and let our voices be heard in a more direct manner. If enough people speak up, something will probably be done. If not, nothing. As my grandfather used to say, "the squeaky wheel gets the grease." I would dare say that our community activist friends are squeaking more, and therefore getting more grease.

There are plenty of people out there who are sick and tired of being sick and tired, and perhaps it's time that we (who live, work, and play in Brickell) organize our own community to speak up against this assault on our neighborhood.

I find these protests extremely annoying and just called 911 to make a complaint. It's very hard to work in the Brickell area because of this excessive noise.

The answer I got? The demonstrators have permits. How these permits are issued given that the noise is so annoying, I have no idea.

We have to ask our government to stop issuing these permits.

Any thoughts on how to accomplish this?
